Speedy Markus "Hercules" Stoeck Breaks 130.7 mph on A Bike

If you are someone who shows your friends your max speed on your bike computer after you cheat death and break 55 mph, think of the jack-o-lantern smile Speedy Markus Stoeck will sport when he shows his friends his new world record speed of 130.7 mph. Markus bombed down a Chilean Alp on an Intense M6 downhill bike for 40 seconds in the freezing cold during a 2000 meter, 45 degree run.

Back From Las Vegas, Let The Games Begin on Sunday

I have to work today and tomorrow (Fri. and Sat.) in the shop. The Vegas Observations will  begin Sunday after I've slept a bit. I spent  18 hours over the course of 2 days talking with 75 different vendors and taking photos with my cheap on-sale at Best Buy camera of many new products for 2008.

Interbike in the Sands Convention Center ends today. Some industry people are imprisoned without light, vegetables, and real exercise for an entire week. Be kind to these people when they get home. Remind them that they don't need to wear their badge to work and that they are no longer trapped in the desert. So no more drinking 4 diet cokes, 6 regular cokes, 4 lipton iced teas, and 8 plastic bottles of water between 9 and 5.

I found the IB vendor guys, who were running the style gamut from Uncle Bill to Sid V on parole, helpful and sporting fabulous manners. The women, representing styles from the friendly girl next door to Uma Thurman in Gattaca to Charlize Theron in Aeon Flux, were all very cheerful and highly knowledgeable about their product lines. People went out of their way to share technical information. You can say it is their job, but after several days of dehydration, scheduled late night events, leg-numbing cement floors, and no natural light, I could see myself cracking and smacking one of the 22,000 people walking into my booth with a glossy new  2008 catalog and price list. Everyone was unfailingly polite.

In general, the impressive bike community waits in long line calmly for cabs, doesn't bump into each other when grazing on $4.50 hotdogs, and holds doors for those leaving for the hotels each night on their fixies. I am happy to say during the daylight, the usual big trade convention sleaze factor was extremely low.  (I had tickets to, but didn't attend, the after-convention functions, so only you know if someone had the bad manners to drink too much in the extra hotel room that served as a pub, chuck, and use your coat sleeve as a napkin. My overall experience was happily pleasant.)

Keep checking back to read about a ton of 2008 products as well as technical information and resources so you can service and maintain those new products.

Thoughts about Solar-Powered Bike

This bike was released in 2006, but if anyone knows anyone who has bought one, put up a post.

I am completely uncertain about the ride quality of the bike once it is modified to provide solar energy to run its front hub 500w motor. The bike they advertise is $1295. And the solar-powered motor kit is $795. The whole thing weighs in at 75lbs.

I kind of like the idea of solar panels as wheel covers. At least, theoretically, there is the promise of more surface area for gathering a suitable amount of passive solar while your bike is parked or set down on the grass while you eat lunch in the park.

I don't want a motor on my own bike. Pedaling makes me happy.  But I would love to adapt a light, efficient charging system that didn't look like an messy pile of duct tape and wires to power my 65w laptop for hours on end when I am away from wall outlets.

Some one call them, and let us know what they say.

Solarpoweredbike

Here is the info. on the manufacturer's site:

The variable speed electronic controller drives the bike to speeds of up to 30 kilometers per hour. Overall weight of the bicycle is 75 lbs. and comes with 17 amp hr. batteries and a built in battery charger.

Cost of the E-V Sunny Bicycle is $1295.00 and comes with a 90-day warrantee. The cost of the kit starts at $795.00, and the Company provides after sales servicing.

I am always interested in solar chargers, since we all spend a big hunk of our time on bikes riding around in sunlight listening to iPods, and not talking on cellphones or checking our email in the middle of traffic. Almost all of those little pocket devices you throw in your bag can be recharged with solar energy.

Here is a new one from Solio. (Check out the solar-powered bike post from today, also.) If you get one of these, and use it on a bike, let us know  what you think of it.

    Wheel Suggestions

    The bicycle wheel,

A spoke breaks, and it wobbles.

    Drink not and snap spokes.

Anodized Track Bars, Stems, Sugino 75s, MKS Toe Clips

If you want track components in anodized colors, send me an email with your contact info. No promises, but one of the shop suppliers, has ordered a bunch of anodized track bike components. I talked with them today. At Interbike the word will get out to those without computers. Then you will be living your life on backorder.

It looks like the cost is about 5-to7% more than usual price for the cost of the anodization. What is 7% when you can pick between something  other than silver and silver. Oh, sorry, and black. The colors available for most of the components are red, blue, purple, gold, and black. Not all components will come in all colors. For example, alloy MKS toe clips are going to be available in blue or gold.  Both the Sugino 75 cranks and the chainring are anodized.

Of course, everything is fashion. But 20 years from now, some kid young enough to be your son or daughter will be looking for your crankset on ebay for his or her retro fixie. So make sure to take a picture of you sitting on your bike next to the gas stations priceboard for gasoline. Get wallet sized photos made for your eventual spawn or that of a family member, so they can ask you why you didn't buy truckloads of gas when it was only $3.60 a gallon.

Some purple Sugino 75s might make for a swanky upgrade to your ride. But get on the list. They will probably sell out pretty quickly, since the last blue crank I saw was a Campy BMX crank, and we know why Campy doesn't make them anymore.

(I have no idea of the actual colors, but I'll take a photo when they arrive at the shop.)

    Sociabletandem

Somebody tell me how this design rides. And if it works for both riders, somebody in a framebuilding course,  make this as your project bike. Then, stop by the shop, and let me try it. I like the idea of not being forced to looking at someone's neck hairs on a pleasure ride.

Forget About the Cabin in Tahoe

OK, you've been talking about living in a cabin away from it all in the woods. But we all know that you can't even keep your pocket knife sharpened, no less build or repair a cabin. Here is the answer: Find some land, and then make sure that land is registered in a county that will  permit you to drag and leave your new $100,000 gutted 747. (187 feet long x 20 feet wide = 3740 square feet = $26.73 per square foot = not bad at all.) Basically, with a bit of solar engineering, a well, and something to scare away the rodents, you are on your way to Walden. It is similar to, but a bit more glamorous than say, living in a shipping container with skylights and an electric guitar.

If it is a bad idea, for example, if you are an aeronautical engineer and you know something we don't know, such as the hulls are filled with radiation from it flying so close to the sun for years, please put up a post.

If anyone buys one of these, write me, and I will send you some peanuts and a deck of cards. No lie.

Cycle Ball: Another Reason to Get Chased By Rent-A-Cops

You  tried bike polo after hours in some corporation's parking lot. You got chased. Why? You were swinging home-made mallets concocted from bits of 2x4s with garage sale golf club shafts jammed into them. Oh no, that doesn't have liability written all over it.

Next time, when you are feeling like a team player, get all of your friends together; put on your soccer clothes from five years ago, jump on your track bikes, and play cycle ball.  Read about the rules , and let's not have all the teams, re: UCI tradition, being made up of guys. Boring. Mix it up. Read about the history of cycle ball so someone has a clue. Remember the Pospíšil brothers, and kick it for your country.

The guys in these photos have special bikes, as you can see. But you can start with a fixie. First, get some supreme balance and grace. Then take everything pointy and dangling off the frame, so you don't lacerate yourself or others on a broken, jagged piece of alloy. Also, remember to put some bar plugs in the bars, so you don't core sample yourself. If anyone has some horsehair, put it inside the ball.

I'd like to watch some cycle ball matches. I am getting kind of bored watching YouTube shorts of people skidding down big hills. It is starting to feel like watching endless downhill videos taken with helmet-mounted cameras. That Was Then, This is Now. (S.E. Hinton was 23 when she wrote that book in 1971. Her first book, The Outsiders, was published when she was 19 in 1967.)

    Cycleball1 Cycleball2 Cycleball3

    http://333.fotoc.com/hk_icycling/v/asian06/cycleball/

    Whose Got Bike Skeeels?

OK, you can trackstand on your fixie. You can chat on your broken phone, while balancing on your bike at a standstill in your kitchen. You can ride backwards circles and screech to you ipod. So, it makes sense that you believe you got skeeels.

You did until you looked at these school kids redefining whose got skeeeels, and upon more viewing, whose got game. (OK, their bikes don't look so filthy punk; the younger ones probably can't go to a concert without their mammas, and they wear tight-rope-walking shoes. But does that really make you feel better?)

And if you and your best girlfriends in the whole world don't know what to do on Saturday night before going out to the club this Saturday, dress up; meet at Sissy's house, and make up a complex bike routine to your favorite songs!

    Waldmeister Wooden Bike at Eurobike

There is something extremely pleasing about wooden bikes.

I have no idea how this particular bike rides. But you could paint your room white. Put your mattress on the floor. Lean this bike against the window sill, and feel like your work as a decorator is done.

    Mavic Website Redesign

Suggestion: I am interested to see something new from Mavic. I carry Mavic race wheels. But I don't need to look at moving pictures of the R-Sys for that long.

But, more importantly, can Mavic, or someone who cares about them, make sure that all of the technical information is included  on the site for easy peasy, frequently sold components, like Open Pro rims?

If you have a silver 28H Mavic old school hub, can you lace it to a 28H silver Open Pro rim? Not according to the 2007 print catalog, which doesn't list a 28H Open Pro in silver.  On the site, under Open Pro "Technologies" it states, "Traditional Drilling" Um..?

(All of the other languages have the same missing information.)

Also, can all of the component manufacturers please put the effective rim diameters and hub specs needed for spoke length calculations on their websites?

And here is an idea that will help those who wheelbuild by candle light away from power grids and pcs, why not print the three digit ERD on rim labels?

If your sister or cousin is working with Mavic, can you put in a call and tell them in the next project status meeting for content to get the drillings listed, as well as the erd, and the manufacturer's suggested retail price (msrp). Thanks from all of us.

Shimano PD-A530 SPD Pedal Great for Touring & Weekend Warriors

Road shoes and road cleats, which stick out and make you walk like a duck, are made for road riding, not stopping by bar-b-ques. SPDs cleats, which are recessed into the sole and are usually found on mountain shoes, are made for the proud and undisciplined road weekend warrior who walks around in bike shoes before, during, and after ride times.

Well, rejoice all ye weekend warriors, because Shimano's new sealed bearing two-sided SPD pedal, the PD-A530, has the SPD cleat holder on top, just like the PD-A520, but it has a flat platform on the other side, so you can ride in your sneakers whenever you feel like it. This also means  you no longer need to hop on one foot next to the bike rack like a nutty vagabond each morning before going into work while you change out of your bike shoes and into your work shoes.

Shimano's one-sided SPD pedals, the PD-A520s are 315 grams a pair. And using them with street shoes, meant that you had a choice of either annoying pain from the cleat holder or pain from the round metal pedal axel case sticking into the soft underbelly of your Vans.

The PD-A530s are the new choice on the block. They weigh in at 386 grams a pair, according to a googled German bike part site. Up to now, Shimano's only other choice for a quality sealed bearing two-sided SPD /platform pedal is the MTB SPD M324, but these bad boys weigh in at 530 grams per pair.

Shimano has an update about the pedal on their site. But the Shimano site search for the pedal and its specifications doesn't return results. google for more info. I'm going to get a bunch of pairs from the Shimano dealer. This year Shimano changed their highest level road pedals so they would have a larger platform around the cleat holder, much like the PD-520s and PD-530s. Hold your head up high, weekend warrior.

Q: Are the prices in the brick and mortar store higher than the prices online?

A: Yes. The prices in the physical shop are a bit higher than the prices in the online store. The online store doesn't make you pay rent:-)

Q: What if a piece of apparel doesn't fit, can I exchange it?

A: Yes, as long as you have not worn it, and it is in its original condition in the bag with its tags attached, so we can resell it. Wheelgirl Tshirts, Trackjackets, and Coffee/Tea Mugs

    Wheelgirl Tshirts

Wheelgirl T-Shirts are 100% cotton and made by American Apparel. Although some don't really like the ads of half-clad pre-teens in the American Apparel clothing catalogs, as far as we know half-clad pre-teens are only modeling the clothing, not actually sewing the clothing for 16 hours a day in a dark ,  unventilated basement. So we are one baby step closer to reasonable. There is a small Wheelgirl logo on the front and a large Wheelgirl logo on the back.

Cost: $20 dollars + shipping and handling and tax where applicable.
Sizes: Small, Medium, Large, Extra Large
Models: Black with Red logos or Black with Electric blue logos

    Wheelgirl Track Jackets

Wheelgirl Track Jackets are 100% cotton and made by American Apparel. There is a small Wheelgirl logo on the front and a large Wheelgirl logo on the back. These jackets are great for after riding or for daily commuting because the two pockets on the front are actually deep enough to hold your phone and keys without your pedaling legs knocking them out onto the yellow line while you are ripping down a street late to work. The weight of the fabric is perfect. And the jackets are so crazy comfortable that you will wear yours for a week without wanting to take it off. But do take it off and wash it now and again. You musky one know who you are, and some do not always want to smell you before they see you, even if they really like you.

Cost: $40 dollars + shipping and handling and tax where applicable.
Sizes: Small, Medium, Large, Extra Large
Models: Black with White Piping and Two Front Pockets, Full Zip, Ribbed Cuffs, Electic blue logos

    Wheelgirl Mugs

You need to throw away your chipped mugs or make them into pencil holders. Listen to my great Aunt Lou, when she says, "Bacteria grows in the cracks". Don't we know it. Now is the time to get yourself a Wheelgirl mug, and think about how you are going to fit in a ride while you sipping an hot or cold beverage. Get one for work to remind yourself to tell the admin that you will be back soon, you just have to step out for a bit to "run an errand," then leave for 30 miles on your bike.

Cost: $6.95 dollars (plus shipping and handling), and you may have to pay tax, depending on where you live.
Sizes: 1 size fits all, dishwasher and microwave safe
Models: Lime green with 2 black Wheelgirl logos, one on each side of the mug.

Salt Water Can Be Burned for Fuel: Ideas for the Feature Film

First, the Disney Movie based on a true story:

John Kanzius, a retired TV station owner and broadcast engineer, woke up in the middle of the night to the idea that he could use radio waves to kill cancer cells. He designed a radio frequency generator in the middle of the night using what was available, his wife's pie pans, and sketched out a way to aim radio waves at teeny bits of metal that could be injected into cancer cells. Basically, the metal would attach to the cancer cells, and only those cells are heated and destroyed when exposed to radio waves.  During his actual experimentation, John was desalinating sea water and set the salt water on fire, thereby discovering an entirely new source of clean burning energy.

Rustum Roy, a Penn State University chemist, tested John's findings and found radio frequencies break the bond of the molecules in the salt, and the released hydrogen is what burns, generating temperatures of 1500 celcius, hot enough to melt a test tube. APV Labs tested and ran motors and devices with the energy. (Click for the youtube clip.)

Next, some ideas for the screen writers working on the next summer block buster:

Well, now that we know that we shouldn't eat wild fish frequently, given the fact they are swimming around in a toxic ocean bath we have created. (We also know we should not eat farmed fish, given the farmer's ability to stock a small tank with a billion fish and make them all sick and scary from smacking into each other, eating drugs so they won't get ill from each other, and living in their own filth.) And since we also know, that given our civilized penchant for piping sewage a few miles off shore, swimming and surfing are new x games, what benefit of salt water is left for us?

    Burn the oceans.

Perhaps we can burn off the future tsunami, a la the movie, The Day After Tomorrow, so The NY Public Library won't be at risk. Even though the water doesn't burn, if burning salt water with radio waves can melt a test tube, someone should be able to figure out how to use the heat to evaporate water.

For those patient, curious cats, if we historically continue to play our cards the same way, we may be able to see to the floor or the ocean. (Remember when the earth was covered with trees?) And then, you can see if you can find the pinky ring you dropped when you were a kid taking the ferry to Montauk. Also, this would solve the problem that we have created by wanting  to live on land, which does not make up  71-75% of the earth. Get rid of all that undrinkable water, and we can create and sell more land to more people.

And then for the sequel, maybe we can figure out how to burn dirt. Then, it is time to move to Mars.

Thought: In that we still have a sun, maybe we should wait to burn the whale oil; crude oil, coal, propane, and anything else considered fossil fuel; the oceans, and dirt until after the sun goes out?

    SRAM Releases Red Groupset

SRAM released the Rival groupset to compete with dependable and accurate Shimano Ultegra and Campaganolo Chorus groupsets and the Force groupset to compete with high-performance racing groupsets, Shimano Dura Ace and Campagnolo Record.

SRAM's lastest groupset, Red, was Tour-de-France-tested during the past few weeks, and Red is expected to be released to SRAM dealers in the Fall of 2007. Red is supposed to give Dura Ace a run for its money. (Campagnolo Record is still the leading choice for weight and performance.)

    A One-Wheeled Mind Rider

Riding your bike too much, reading too little, and feeling like a lean and speedy dumb ass? Set those sitbones down on this one-wheeled mind rider, and read. Then after your rides, during intellectual conversations at home and work, you will have something interesting to contribute, and you will stop chiming in with the paraphrasing of Yahoo's daily homepage news, "Should you buy one kitten or two kittens?"

Wheels on a Wheelchair, Which Moves With Words That Are Thought Not Spoken

Wheels allow us many levels of freedom. And if you can't speak, and you do not have the use of your limbs, how do you command or manipulate the controls to the wheels of your wheelchair, so you can get where you need to go?

Ambient created a software that works with a sensor that rests on the vocal chords of a person who cannot communicate through speech or physical movements. The sensor intercepts neurological waves from the person's brain and translates the thoughts into commands to drive the wheelchair. (Check out the youtube link.)

Cannondale's Concept Folder a Curiousity at Eurobike

Cannondale's Concept folder has a righty fork, instead of their lefty fork. You press the red button in the middle to fold the bike. As you can see from the photo, people look a bit confused. A drag about Cannondale stuff is that lots of it is proprietary, so trying to service customer Cannondales is sometimes a royal pain. More to come after someone has taken a ride.

Dahon Shows of Light but Pricey Limited Edition 25th Anniversary Mu XXV

Eurobike was a folder fest with Dahon showing off its 25th anniversary folder for 2008, the magnesium Mu XXV weighing in at 16.61 lbs and costing 2500 Euros. Dahon is making a special edition run of 250 bikes.

OK, now, I know for a fact that the discontinuned black Dahon Helios SL from 2005 weighs in at 18.1 lbs, since I sold and weighed one on my stand. Its msrp was $999. None of the alloy componentry on the Helios SL is optimized for weight. The frame is aluminum. The wheelset is nice, a Rolf paired-spoke lightweight set with skinny Schwalbe 20" Stelvio tires that has a yellow-orange stripe that picks up the yellow-orange in the downtube label. The Helios SL bars are carbon, and they can score, so be careful and maybe replace them with alloy if you habitually loosening the clamp that holds them in place. So $999 for 18.1 lbs non-optimized folder or a modern-looking 2008 anniversary Mu XXV at 16.61 lbs for what comes to $3402 in today's Euro-to-dollar conversion?

It is Time to Order a Custom Wheel Build

Scenerio #1: The Non-Competitive Rider Who Cares

You are not obsessed with component weight, but you love the way you feel when you ride a tight bike. You are truly tired of the minimally spoked Bontrager, FSA, Shimano, Formula, Fulcrum way-below-race quality wheels that came spec'd on your road, track, or mountain bike.

You are ready to have a decent set of road wheels built for you. You want the option of replacing a broken spoke at just about any bike shop in the world.  You ride maybe 6K miles a year for pleasure, your health, your happiness.

Here are some wheelbuilds that might make you way happier than the hoops on which you are riding. All the hubs are listed at manufacturer suggested retail price. Check the manufacturers' website for prices. Unless something is dated or discontinued, most excellent bike components have a set msrp so that the value of the part is controlled by the manufacturer, not your cousin Vinny who might sell the family car for a buck fifty and a can of Colt 45. Is this bogus? Well, it stops Vinny from selling a new Chris King hub set on ebay for $40, and I am OK with that. Spending some money for a King hub set that I am going to beat the hell out of and may probably last 10+ years if I service them when I need to, is fine with me. My chipped cellphone bill will cost me more in 6 months than that new King hubset. No lie.

Pricepoint is great for machine built wheel deals of erratic quality. Maybe you are feeling lucky? Sometimes I see big guys who spend $220 for Ultegra on Open Pros and never have a problem. Then there are the 145-pound guys who bring in the Pricepoint wheels a few times, since the spokes keep breaking. Roll the dice.

    Some hubs:

    • Chris King Classic Road Hubs

    • DTSwiss 240s Road Hubs

    • Shimano Hubs

    • Campagnolo Hubs

    • Phil Wood Hubs

    • Paul Component Hubs

    • White Industries Hubs

    • Your Good Still Useful Hubs Laced to New Rims

Rim costs for high-quality Mavic, Velocity, WTB, DTSwiss rims range from $60 to $80 each (Black usually costs more.) Any other high-quality road, mountain, cross, track rims that make sense laced to a specific hub are also fine. We can get everything. But no expensive pieces of engineering art hubs on hoopdee rims that cost $20 dollars each. Make a baked potato for a few nights, save some money, and get some decent rims. Budget rims on great hubs is not a winning strategy; it is a dumb strategy.

    Spokes
Sapim Double Butted 14/15/14 stainless steel in silver or black with polyax brass nipples work fine. we cut them to size with a Phil Wood spoke cutter, the mechanical equivalent of a co-host facility. (Yes, you can do alloy nipples, but unless you intend to change the nipples each year, the mechanic who has to true your wheels is going to tell you at some point that the nipples are frozen. Alloy mates with alloy. And you are going to be up a creek without a paddle. Spoke and nipple weigh 7grams together. Cut off some of your hair if you need to save weight. If you not receiving a payday for your work as pro bike rider, keep your high-quality wheelset easy to true and service. Pros are paid to take equipment risks. The rest of us are just going to end up watching daytime TV on the couch if we stack on a set of untrue, cracked nippled and rimmed wheels.

Scenerio # 2: The Racing Rider Who Needs Speed, Aerodynamics, Light Weight, and Efficiency at the Cost of Practical Service and Value

My thought: It is 20% bike and 80% you. Expensive, impractical wheels have a place in this world. If you can't do anything else that is legal to make yourself ride faster, buy prebuilt, superlight, factory pro-level racing wheelsets. Check out Mavic, Fulcrum (Campagnolo's wheel corp.) Reynolds, Lew, Zipp, Hed, Lightweights, Specialized, Bontrager. Spend at least $1,000, that is the entry point to the world of pricey race wheels.  Buy whatever you see the Pros racing on this season. The technology changes season to season. And you take your wallet in your hands when it comes to carbon rims cracking. They do crack, and you rarely get your money back. Those are the breaks if you want to ride on the bleeding edge. Anything handbuilt, including tune hubs with cx-ray spokes on whatever rim is usually not going to have the built-in 2-year insurance policy that Mavic let's me sell for 8% of the wheel purchase price at the time of purchase.  Granted, the weight and composite technology of first generation stuff is always a bit scary, and expensive wheels won't make you faster if you are slow.  But in the end, you'll usually want something uber light and inelastic.  Please save those helpful suggestions for me to build with a lighter spoke and nipple in an effort to make a 2x or 3x wheelset ride like a TdF factory pro-level tubular wheelset. That is goofy. Racing wheels are for racing. They can be, but they are usually not, practical. They are light, aero,  and usually require some proprietary item like a spoke, nipple, or wrench that all the tool vendors have sold out of, when something breaks. Have at least a spare set of training wheels if you are going to venture into wheelset high finance. If you are racing at the level where you would be buying a boron this, carbon oriented that way, secret spy bonded that, or magnesium whoha, you already know all of this. I stock and am happy to order whatever set of  racing hoops you saw on Versus's coverage of the TdF and dream about riding to a podium place.
