Interbike in Vegas 2011 Get out! There's a wooden track by the snackbar?
None of the vendors knew I was going to visit. I did not research anything prior to my visits; hence, I'm learning as I'm filming, so bear with me. I was delighted with how helpful and forthcoming the vendors were with technical product information. As I edit out the unplanned shots of the floor and my less than generous comments about video camera batteries, I'll post them.
(I only shoot video once a year at Interbike, which is wicked loud. I bought an open box video camera on deep discount from Best Buy a day before the show. These facts will come as no surprise to you when you watch the videos.)

Wheelgirl Bike Shop Holiday Bonanza Food & Gifts, Sat. 12/12 & Sat. 12/19
OK, my cats who are holiday broke, nervous, crazy, riding around this winter in the dark with frozen hands on stretched chains and bald tires. You're not buying your holiday gifts at Walgreens.Take that Sharpie and write Saturday Dec. 12th and Saturday Dec. 19th somewhere on your body or sneakers, so you remember to stop by the shop on both of these days and attend the Wheelgirl Bike Shop Holiday Bonanza 11-6 rain or shine.
We are going to eat cupcakes, at the cupcake bake off on Sat. Dec. 12th; drink free coffee, deal on all bike components, and buy all of our cool artsy and craftsy holiday gifts for $10-$30. On Sat. Dec. 19th, we are going to eat food made with Stonehouse Olive Oil, drink more free coffee, and buy more inexpensive and unique gifts. Sure you can go stand in line all day, in the dark, away from oxygen and sunlight, on the cement floors of Costco or Target, to buy her/him yet another thing with a plug. But why?
Makers of Arts & Crafts: If you want to be a vendor at the Wheelgirl Holiday Bonanza, send an email to service@wheelgirl.com. (Look to the left under the logo, and click on the email link.) It's $10 each day for a 4-to-6 foot table and we'll figure out how to make your table of treats fit. We like supporting makers. Kind of late notice. But I'm kind of a cat of the moment. You've got a week to get it together. We'll keep your veins filled with coffee.Bring it!
Another cool event poster by cyclist and graphic artist Dalton Crosthwait. Photo of recycled bike part jewelry designed and created by employee and cyclist Bryan at the shop. Yes, copy cats, Bryan took all the pins out and paired the linking plates. Check out Dalton's other work at design + motion at www.monstrodesign.com

Wheelgirl is Looking for a Few Good Bike Mechanics
If you are an experienced bike mechanic who has put together pricey road bikes for highly discerning (and kind) customers, and you are looking for part-time work this bike season, please send your resume to us. You must also be able to tune-up a faithful 7-speed Stumpjumper or 3-speed Raleigh commuter bike. You must have current bike shop or race mechanic experience with current knowledge of Campagnolo, Shimano, and SRAM bike components to be considered for these positions. That means you have put lots of Campy and Shimano 10-speed drive trains on bikes. Campy 11-speed experience isn't required. Jump to read the particulars of applying.
(Photos lifted from the web.)
The mechanic positions at Wheelgirl are not "learning"
opportunities. We are not able to train you on the job. Slow and steady
can't win this particular race. We need experienced mechanics who can
spin a wrench quickly and accurately. If the service time estimates in
Barnett's is business as usual for you, make sure to apply. If you have
built over 50 wheel sets from scratch, make sure to apply. We will need
you to work weekend as well as week day hours. If you are working at
another bike shop, but have had your hours cut due to the sluggish
economy, feel free to apply. We are flexible with scheduling. And we
will allow you mainline unflavored coffee all day, every day.
When you send your resume via email, (service@wheelgirl.com) please type or cut and paste your resume directly into the email. We won't open any attachments,
so please don't attach your resume to the email (computer virus stuff,
etc.) Show me the money, you say! Your hourly wage depends on your
experience, accuracy, speed, and references. You get what you pay for,
and we are happy to pay for the skill sets we need. Please put the word
"Part-Time Mechanic" in the subject line.
Note: We will contact
you if your experience appears to be a good match for the positions.
Please do not call the shop. There are many hard workers out of work
these days. These mechanic positions, however, are only going to be
filled by those who have bike shop references. So, please do not email
your resume unless you have current bike shop or race mechanic
experience. Thanks for reading.

Evening Bike Shop Sale & Musical Event With Art and Great Food
Today begins the Holiday Bike Sale with 10-20% off of selected items. Oh yes, this is the weekend to pick up some sweet deals on bikes and accessories. We are kicking off the sale with an evening event at Wheelgirl tonight, Dec. 13, 2008 from 4:30pm-7:30pm.
When you are done with your late afternoon ride, stop by the shop for amazing food treats provided by Berkeley's 4th St. Eccolo Restaurant, Bette's Oceanview Diner, Tacubya Restaurant, as well as Acme Bread, and some sort of crazy good dessert from Spenger's Restaurant. Oh yes, there will be beverages in the form of wine (think small cups of holiday cheer my thirsty bike-riding rock stars), as well as bottled water, and soda.
In addition, Thomas Viloteau, a world-class classical guitar player will be performing from 5:00pm-7:30pm. He is a phenomenally gifted young musician visiting the Bay Area via Paris who commutes on a Redline 29er 1x9 bicycle.
Hope
to see all of you cats tonight. If you see a bunch of dog head
paintings on display, you are in the right place. (Jump for more.)
Photo by Wheelgirl. Still sunny the second week of December in Berkeley.
Thomas is on this month's cover of Guitare Classique Magazine, and between giving concerts in Asia, Europe, and the US, he will be playing jazz and classical music tonight
at the Wheelgirl Bike Shop. So put down your iPod; tape that Comcast movie on
your DVR, and get yourself and your friends to the shop.
Thomas's CD
, recorded after he won the 2006 Guitar Foundation of American
competition a couple of years ago, is available on the Naxos label (a super fine classical guitar label.) For those of you who dp not follow the classical guitar scene, the GFA cometition is a big, big deal. It draws the best-of-the-best international classical guitar players and rewards the
winner with a CD contract, a bunch of money, and a concert tour of the USA.

Canstruction for the Creative & Helpful Metal Heads in the Peleton
I was in NYC for the November holiday break. And what to my wondering eyes did appear, but this free and great Canstruction Exhibit! If you are a creative metal-loving bike maniac with a tender heart, and you don't have the resources to build a frame this winter, get your cycling pals together for a few days this holiday season and build your own canstruction. Pick the guy or gal who is still obsessed with Legos and not constantly talking about bottle openers you can put on a keychain to be the team leader. Design and build something insanely multi-colored of shiny tin. If you are on the West Coast, go visit the Canstruction Exhibit in the South Bay.
The Canstruction exhibit has been going on for years. Architectural and engineering firms design and create giant sculptures from cans of food. And after the builders have enjoyed themselves engineering and architecting the canstructions, and people like me have marveled at their 2500-pound creative acts, at the end of the exhibit, the canned food is donated to social programs that feed people who are homeless and hungry.
Make sure you have a reinforced floor. Or better yet, get out into the front yard, and make your neighbors shake their heads in disbelief. (Post a link to your canstruction so we can enjoy your metal-loving mind.)

Lock It, Light It, & Carry It Wheelgirl Sale Save 10% on Locks, Lights, Messenger Bags, Bike Caps, Wheelgirl Apparel This Week
Yes, we are having a bike-back-to-school sale from Saturday Aug. 29th through Sunday Sept. 7th. Anyone with a student ID of any sort gets 10 percent off of locks, lights, messenger bags, backpacks, bike caps, and Wheelgirl-branded apparel. We do have some great bags from Reload, Soma, Knog, Jaand, Basil, and Chrome. We have Cateye and Knog lights, and we have a ton of U locks from Kryptonite and OnGuard. Also, included in the sale are Campagnolo, MKS, Sugino, Nitto, and a ton of the cool world championship colors and retro bike team caps, like 7-11 and Panasonic. And of course, you can save 10 percent on any Wheelgirl American Apparel zipped hoody, t-shirt, or track jacket.
The gear is great. And ten-percent savings adds up on a pricey-but-well-worth-it bike bag. Also, in the case of Chrome bags, if you don't see the exact Chrome bag you want, we can order it for you, and you will still receive the discount. However, as much as I like the great gear, I really like the bike-back-to-school ad campaign talented Dalton, Wheelgirl bike shop employee and graphic design student at Expression College, designed and created with his friends Santiago, Vaughn, and Erika. Here are some of the "Need a lock?" ads Dalton and his friends made one evening. If you ride a bike, and you are caught without your lock, you know the feeling. Stop by the shop this weekend. It should be a happy circus. Thanks Dalton, Santiago, Vaughn, and Erika for truly making me feel your lockless pain and for making me grin.

Chrome Bag Has New San Francisco Store Location, Bike Video Screening at July Grand Opening
Since the Tour De France began, the Wheelgirl bike shop has been extra slammed. (This is a good problem to have.) However, in the crazy happy chaos of wheelbuilds and custom bike builds, I forgot to post photos of my 4th of July weekend visit to the new Chrome Bag store in San Francisco. Chrome moved from their Folsom Street location to a beautiful space at 580 4th Street, between Brannon and Bryant, right near the Cal Train station. (Jump to read more, and see more photos.)
At Chrome, Wyatt and Shawn showed me around the new digs. Shawn built the industrial-looking metal and wood display table, which I really like. And I got to check out limited edition bags that I had not seen before that were floating around the store. Flourescents are not at the top of my favorite color list. However, if I had to pick out the messenger bags a car driver during rush hour might most easily see on the back of a cyclist, the bright and garish flourescent mixes win hands down. So, if you are an "Autumn" and look better in browns and greens, but need to be highly visible on your bike commute, you may want to trade your fashion sense for some safety sense, and opt for something hideously bright. (We carry Chrome bags in the Wheelgirl store, so email if you are looking for a certain messenger bag.)
The new Chrome retail space is much bigger and brighter than the old one. One wall has a giant sculpture of scrambled bike frames, a "wheelnado" (my name for it) reaches from the bag racks way up to the ceiling, and a smaller scrambled bike sculpture screens over-zealous bag purchasers from jumping up into the front windows. The store actually opened on June 24th. But there is a Grand Opening on July 31, and the winning bike video from the Chrome Bags Video Contest will be screened at that party. You can check out the video contest entries here.

Macaframa Poetry in Motion and Cog Magazine
You messy fixed gear riding cats, I don't care if you wash or match your sock. Just keep continuing to entertain me completely with your brave and unique fixed gear poetry in motion. I found an issue of Cog Magazine at the new Chrome Bag store 4th of July weekend, and when I went to Cog's site, watching the Macaframe trailer below made me grin. Yes, Aunt Lou, it is dangerous. But as Jenny Holtzer observed in her 1983-1985 Survival writings: "Finding extreme pleasure will make you a better person if you're careful about what thrills you." I am still saving that t-shirt with one-line Holzer truisms.
The Macaframe video site has other really short film trailers that marry the two-wheeled grace and balance of fixed gear urban riding to evocative music. Pretty in my ears and pretty on my eyes. (Can you Macaframe guys light some candles, have a seance, and channel some of your image-to-music and machine-to-movement intuitiveness to the Discovery Channel show, How It's Made. Help them to help themselves.)
If you ride any type of bike in San Francisco, check out the short fixed gear video clips. And if you love all things fixed gear, click through Cog Magazine. Print copies of Cog were shipped yesterday. There is no charge for the magazine. It is completely free if you buy anything from the Wheelgirl bike shop. But you can subscribe if you like by visiting their site. Suggestion: Work up to difficult tricks if you are new to fixie trick riding. Gifted fixsters are usually happy to share their tips for ways to keep the blood and bones on the inside of your skin.

Download Free PDF of Urban Velo Bike Magazine, Read and Recover From Your Great July 4th Weekend
You had a great July 4th weekend. You rode your bike around the excellent and happily empty city streets of San Francisco, since tens of thousands of people left town during the holiday weekend. You've thanked your lucky stars for the invention of corn on the cob. Now it is time to go back to work and to make your summer bike commute through the city even more enjoyable. Step 1: Download the PDF of the latest issue of Urban Velo magazine. Step 2: Read about people like you who love riding their bikes in city environments. The PDF is a scan of the exact magazine. Stop by the shop and check out the printed magazine, which should be available in a few days. Suggestion: Read Urban Velo #8 from cover to cover. You are not going to get any real work done until tomorrow anyway.
(Yes, Wheelgirl does have an ad in Urban Velo reminding people that there are only 25 days left to submit a winning design to the Wheelgirl 2008 T-Shirt Design Contest and win a set of Phil Wood track hubs. You got skeeels? Bring home the Phils.)

Game Over for BART Bike Thief, Score One for Business Woman Bike Commuter
Here is a great to-catch-a-bike-thief story. Customer Kiki walked out of the Berkeley Ashby BART station, and she was looking forward to riding her Dutch commuter bike home after a long day at work. The hot dog man, who has watched Customer Kiki lock up her bike and get on BART for years, yelled to her, "He just stole your bike! That guy steals bikes all the time!" and pointed to some guy across the street, who was walking away from the BART with Customer Kiki's bike and another bike.
Customer Kiki, in formal business attire, looked at the bike rack, and suddenly realizing her bike was, in fact, missing, started running after the guy, who was stealing it. While sprinting across the cross-walk, all the while dragging her rolling business laptop case, she spotted a police car, flagged down an officer, and the police officer arrested and hand-cuffed the guy.
When asked why he had taken the bike, the bike thief, an older guy, said, "The key was in the bike lock, and I didn't want anyone to steal it, so I was watching it for her." Yes, like many of us, in a rush to avoid missing the train, Customer Kiki had inadvertently left the key in the bike lock. But, as the police officer reminded the thief, key or no key, it is against the law to take something that doesn't belong to you. The officer reunited Customer Kiki with her beloved Dutch commuter bike and put the wicked bike stealing man in the black and white (with the other stolen bike) and took him down to the station. Game over for the BART bike thief. Score one for bike commuters everywhere.

Wheelgirl is Hiring: Wanted Bike Mechanic with Shop Experience
It is that time of year again. We are looking for bike mechanics with at least 4 years of shop experience.
If you are interested, please click here, and email your bike mechanic resume in the body of your email. (No attachments will be opened, so please do not attach your resume to your email. We don't want to get virus spammed.) In this plain email, list your experience and education and/or bike mechanic school certificates.
The pay depends on experience, but we pay between $14.00 and $17.00 per hour. You are expected to perform services and tune-ups as well as build custom high-quality road, mountain, and track bikes from the frame up as well as custom wheel sets. We are a dealer for custom Independent Fabrication and custom titanium Lynskey Performance frames. We have over 30 specialty vendors, so we can spec and build just about any type of bike a customer can imagine. If you are reading this and have checked out the website, you have a clue as to our sensibilities.
All resumes will be read and considered. We are primarily considering those mechanics with current bike shop experience or industry experience, such as working as a race team mechanic. If you in the process of relocating from another part of the country, this could be a great opportunity.
The coffee and the atmosphere on 4th Street, an open-air shopping district with lovely restaurants, is sweet. Our customers are appreciative and polite. We are 1 mile from the North Berkeley Bart station. (Our cross street is Virginia.) so you can easily ride your bike from the Bart station if you are planning on commuting via Bart. We keep sane hours, 11 am to 6 pm, so you can usually get in some great riding before or after work, if you are training and/or racing. We offer sponsorship opportunities for those who can race and wrench responsibly.

One Stolen Bike Recovered on the Way to the Bike Shop
I was riding to work last Saturday, taking a different way, enjoying the sunshine. I looked to my right, and I was just about to pass two guys, one on a skateboard pushing a white GT mountain bike and the other on an black single-speed IRO Highlander.
I smiled and nodded to the guy on the black IRO Highlander. I like IRO frames. They are practical and don't cost an arm and a leg. He smiled back. I noticed the Wheelgirl sticker on the top tube. Cool. Thanks for the support, I thought. Then my brain remembered that I had helped to build that bike, and it was for a girl who had told me several weeks ago it was stolen while locked up at the BART!
In that I have been watching a bunch of action adventure movies, while I wait for the time to change and the days to get longer, I pulled in front of the guys, took out my cellphone, and let them know, with a smile, that they could start walking, or we could all have a conversation with the police. "How do you know it is stolen?" they asked. I pointed to the Wheelgirl work t-shirt I was wearing and the sticker on the bike. "We built that bike for a girl, and she told us it was stolen at the BART" "But we bought it from a guy at the BART," they answered. Lesson learned: Don't buy bikes at the BART from people you don't know. If you want to gamble with your money, go to Las Vegas.
They both knew the jig was up. And to their credit, they gave up the bike without a fight or a harsh word. One guy was in his twenties, and one guy was at least in his thirties. The bike was pretty trashed, but after a tune up, some new cables, housing, brake pads, pedals, and a polish she is looking like a sweet single-speed ride again. (Read after the jump, urban cyclists, to see if you can answer the U lock riddle.)
Photos taken by Wheelgirl. This is the bike right after it was recovered from an adventure as stolen property.
The girl who owns the bike told me that she had locked the bike with a new Kryptonite lock, and the lock was still there after the bike was stolen. The lock was closed, both pieces were locked together, and it was fully functioning. It wasn't cut, mangled, or broken? If you have had this wacky lock thing happen with a newer U lock that was made after 2006, put up a post, and let me know how bike thieves are performing this trick. (This was not an older U lock that you could open with a pen.) This is the second time I have heard of a bike being stolen without the Kryptonite U lock being damaged in any way.

North American Handmade Bicycle Show, If This Eye Candy Had Calories, You Would Be One Fat Hog
I attended the 2006 and 2007 North American Handmade Bicycle Shows (NAHBS) in San Jose. The show were feasts for the eyes for anyone who loves bikes. (We've got both show posters framed up on the wall in the shop.) I didn't make it to the 2008 show this year in Portland. But by all reports, it was a huge success. Here is a short list of links you can click through to view photos and get an idea of the festivities.
- The first image below is a list of Best in Show from the votes placed by those attending the NAHBS Show Daily Sunday Night.
- The next image below, is a photo of a bike made by Sam of Naked Bicycles and Design (photo take by UrbanVelo.org.) Sam won three categories for this bike.
- Click here for a list of every builder at the show and his or her website.
- Photos from the show, particularly close ups and detail images can be found here and here on the NAHBS website alphabetically arranged.
- And make sure to read all of the features in the NAHBS Show Daily Reports: Day 1, Day 2, Day 3 Morning, Day 3 Evening . There are interviews and interesting information related to materials and bicycle frame building.
- Bicycleradar.com coverage by Gary Boulanger, US editor has a ton of full-bike photos and attendance numbers of approximately 6800 attendees for the show versus 5000 attendees last year in San Jose.
- Check out the Velonews coverage by Matt Pacocha and the Velonews NAHBS Gallery
- Check out the 5-part series on the NAHBS on cyclingnews.com Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, Part 5 by James Huang. Make sure to view a photo of a twenty-something Chris King and an example of a bicycle frame he made under the name, "Cielo".

Mr. Unworthy Thief Has Stolen Customer Anne's Fixie
Customer Anne was getting ready to ride home from the gym Tuesday evening when she had her Lemond fixie ripped out of her hands by an unidentified thief. He rode away, and she was not harmed. This happened in the Mission in San Francisco, CA. A police report has been filed. She has posted the stolen bike description on Craig's List. If you see the whole bike or pieces of the bike for sale around SF, contact her via email.
Wheelgirl bike shop built the bike for her, and I built the wheels. I hate to think of someone who can't even spin 52T, finish two Ironman Triathalons, or win the Women's Cat. 4 2007 Berkeley Bike Club Team Time Trial cruising around on her ride.
You cannot possibly be worthy of that bike, Mr. Thief. You will certainly be getting a lump of coal this holiday season.

Mermaid Triathalon A Success
If you get your feeling of freedom from wheels rolling underneath you via human power, stop by the shop. Yes, that includes guys, gals, and tiny babies in strollers.
(Well done on the Mermaid, Marisol the Organizer!)
Thank You SPONSORS!!!
The 2007 Santa Cruz Mermaid was a huge success!
This was our first triathlon "sell out" as we capped registration at 500 participants. There was an impressive turnout of spectators and we've never seen so many dad's pushing baby strollers as they cheered on their spouses. In all, we estimate that
over 1500 people were in attendance at Seacliff State Beach.
We look forward to growing each of our events in 2008 and with your help
and continued support we'll hit 800 participants next year.
Your support and donations to the Mermaid made it possible for us to donate to local athletics and charity funds. In all the Mermaid donated over $3,500 to our volunteer groups (Harbor High School Water Polo Team, Santa Clara Women's Crew and Santa Clara Men's Crew) as well as the Sara Cole Fund. Sara was hit by a drunk driver several weeks prior to the event and is still recovering from the incident. One of her close friends organized a group to run the triathlon and raise funds for Sara. The Mermaid donated a portion of the groups registration fee to the Sara Cole Fund. If you are interested in more information about the Sara Cole Fund please send us an email.
To all of our mermaid sponsors a most sincere Thank You.
We hope to work with you again at on our 2008 Mermaid Series.
Sincerely,
Mermaid Series
